No-exam life insurance

Who is eligible for fast underwriting, what happens when you are approved without an exam, and what the process looks like if you are not.

Many carriers today provide accelerated underwriting: they can make decisions for applicants within specific age and coverage limits by reviewing your application, checking prescription records, looking at your driving record, and analyzing other available data—without a paramedical exam. In many cases you get a decision within a day. Each quote here will tell you whether that carrier requires an exam, might require one, or does not require one for that particular plan.

What it changes

An exam-free path does not mean skipping underwriting entirely. The carrier will verify your answers, and any policy issued based on false information can be challenged in the first two years. If the carrier's own records show something that needs clarification, they may still request an exam or lab work—at which point you can decide whether to proceed.

Who tends to qualify

Usually this applies to applicants under about 60 years old, applying for coverage up to the carrier's set limit, with no serious health issues and no tobacco use in the past year. If you have had a recent checkup that included blood work, some carriers will use those lab results instead of requiring their own exam.

If an exam is needed, it is normally a 20- to 30-minute visit from a paramedical professional at a location you choose—your home or office. There is no charge to you. For people in good health, the exam can actually improve your rate class, so it is not necessarily a drawback.
